Daily Find #42

Transmission went out in the Corolla, had to buy a new car, today I sprained my ankle playing basketball at lunch, hasn’t been my week.

3 Request for ASP.NET 4 and VS 10 - All three would be so nice.

Rackspace goes Mosso - So Mosso is a hosting that allows you to run PHP/CGI/Ruby/.NET all from the same hosting.  Their management interface is really nice and their tech support is decent/good.  Only gripe is their servers are slow, maybe Rackspace can improve here.

IE 8, blurry images, UseHR

I have a dell latitude d820 and the dreaded blurry image syndrome is back with IE 8 beta.  The previous fix was to add a registry key UseHR or get this fix from dell but right now neither seem to be working.  More on this soon…

Daily Find #39

I watched the MIX08 keynote yesterday live.  Something’s I took away from it:  Sorry Ray Ozzie is seriously boring, his keynote wasn’t inspiring, informative, or appealing.  I’m glad Microsoft is catching up with the cloud, they are at least 2 years behind Google (last year they were 4 years so they are making progress).  They are really pushing Silverlight hard, even selling out to Nokia to get it on their phone.  IE 8 looks promising, web slices look good, CSS 2.1, and HTML 5 goodness.  Scott Gu is still the man, watch out Ray :)

Ruby on Rails for Windows Developers

Until IronRuby comes out 100% I’m going to be diving into RoR.  It’s obvious RoR was constructed by *nix people so I’m hoping I’m not making it even harder on myself by trying to do this on Windows but here goes anyways.

Resources I’ve Found:

Windows

RailsOnWindows - Start here…

O’Reilly ONLamp.com - Step by Step from installing Ruby to MySQL and so on.

Instant Rails - one stop Rails runtime solution, includes Ruby, Rails, Apache, MySQL all preconfigured to run

RubyStack - Another click installer that brings over Ruby on Rails, MySQL, Apache

Daily Find #38

Office Live Workspaces beta - Almost a Google Docs competitor but still appears you need to have word/excel/ppt locally and this saves it up in the cloud.  Does come with versioning and sharing.  You can download a msi that puts a "Save to Cloud" right in Word/Excel/PPT which is much better then doing a file upload.  I can see using this as a backup solution.

Joining The Lounge

So it’s official, I’m now part of the advertising network,  The Lounge.  James Avery has put together some great blogs in the .NET Small Publishers Room that I’m now apart of so I’ll be ramping up the quality and quantity of post here to stay up with these guys.  It’s a great opportunity for advertisers to get in front of developers/IT in a cost effective and most importantly (too me anyway’s) a measurable medium.  More details here, don’t wait to sign up I hear the room is filling up quickly.
